In our beautiful site in the idyllic Ojai Valley, your child's summer will be filled with swimming, arts and crafts, sports, Israeli dance and Jewish music, cooking, organic gardening, drama/musical theater, ropes course, hiking, camping trips and much more! Our sports program includes basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, Krav Mega, aerobics, kick boxing, ga-ga...and an all-camp Maccabiah!

You can depend on our staff to help children entering 3rd to 10th grade discover their own talents and interests and find the connection between the Jewish traditions and our lives. Beyond activities, Ramah staff are trained to teach and praise Jewish values such as honesty, community, torah, honor, and God so that a summer at Ramah lasts a life time.

Jewish study is another important part of a summer at Ramah. Hebrew is spoken and learned at camp in a spirit unique to Ramah. Our Hebrew plays and engaging classes make both Hebrew and Judaism come alive! Jewish values underlie a concern for each individual and the development of a spirited and warm community. It's an experience that will last a lifetime.

A Jewish Community

At Ramah, your child lives in a fun, caring Jewish community in which each child is valued as an individual and as part of a larger family. Jewish prayer, texts, and customs are explored through engaging discussions, participatory activities and Shabbat celebration. Hebrew is spoken and learned at camp in a spirit unique to Ramah, and comes alive in the chadar ochel (dining room), on the stage of our amphitheater, in cheers and throughout camp. Jewish and Israeli culture is celebrated through song, food, art and dance. As campers grow, we focus on developing leadership, social action and importance of the State of Israel.

Summer Recreational Programming

The focus of the Ramah program is fun! Through their years at camp, your child will enjoy the following types of activities:

  • Aquatics - swimming lessons, lifeguard training, water polo and water sports
  • Performing Arts - drama, dance, rock band and other music
  • Sports - basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, ga-ga, self-defense, archery and more...

Staff

With over 200 staff each summer, Camp Ramah in California provides a quality summer experience to every camper. Counselors receive rigorous training in child development, programming skills and Jewish education. Your child learns from specialists who come with strong, diverse backgrounds, in their area of focus. Trained college graduates lead each unit and work closely with an experienced advisor. Camp Ramah is also distinguished by a professional medical staff including a physician, team of nurses and infirmary adminstrator.

Camp Ramah is proud to feature on staff a team of Parent Liaisons (Yoetzot) who watch over the individual needs of our campers. Each is a trained professional in the fields of youth development and educaiton, and supports one or two grade levels. When a concern arises they serve as a nurturing link between you and our camper. Parent Liaisons also participate in our staff training program as instructors.

Communication

At camp we try to keep in touch throughout the summer! In order to foster campers' independence cellular phones are strictly prohibited, and campers may not send e-mails nor place or receive phone calls. Campers are encouraged to write letters home to family and friends, and may receive letters and e-mails from correspondents. A special summer website features pictures of campers in action during the session, as well as occasional news updates. Parent Liaisons send weekly e-mail updates to parents on programmatic highlights for each grade level.

Facility

Nestled in the lovely hills of Ojai, your camper will enjoy fresh mountain air and natural vistas in a peaceful wooded setting. Younger campers sleep in wooden bunks with private bathrooms, heating and air conditioning, while our older campers sleep in tent quarters with electricity and overhead lights. Campers enjoy nutritious meals and snacks from our kosher dining room and love to use our Olympic-size swimming pool, sports facilities, hiking trails, art complexes, amphitheater and ropes course. Camp Ramah in California is proud to be the first Jewish summer camp in the United States with a solar energy system to provide a major portion of our energy needs. Campers feel like they are playing a role in protecting their environment.

Transportation

Each summer campers travel to Ramah from all over. Campers who come to camp from Southern California are invited to join us at of a number of special Ramah designated bus sites. Campers board buses and embark on the summer experience with new and old friends, along with nurturing members of our summer staff. Travelers from more distant cities are assigned to Ramah designated airline flights and are either escorted by summer staff on the plane* or greeted by a member of our summer staff at the gate. Flyers then board private buses from the airport to camp. Families who prefer to drive directly to camp on the first or last day are welcome to do so.

*Camp Ramah often assigns a staff flight chaperone on flights with more than 10 campers
